SYNOPSIS

Charlie Bucket comes from a poor family, and spends most of his time dreaming about the chocolate that he loves but usually can't afford. Things change when Willy Wonka, head of the very popular Wonka Chocolate empire, announces a contest in which five gold tickets have been hidden in chocolate bars and sent throughout the country. The kids who find the tickets will be taken on a tour of Wonka's chocolate factory and get a special glimpse of the wonders within. Charlie miraculously finds a ticket, along with four other children much naughtier than him. The tour of the factory will hold more than a few surprises for this bunch.

QUOTES FROM JOHNNY DEPP

"I think I let him finish half a sentence," Depp says, laughing, "and I just went, 'I'm in. I'm there.' I hadn't even seen a script."

Johnny Depp, Newsweek, july 2005

Deep Roy played every Oompa-Loompa himself, repeating the same movements several hundred times. While these were then put together digitally, each Oompa-Loompa represents a separate performance by Roy. In recognition of this, Roy's salary was raised to $1,000,000

"To be chosen to play Willy Wonka in itself is a great honor. But to be chosen by Tim Burton is double, triple the honor."
Johnny Depp, IGN july 2005

"As a kid, from what I understand, I'd like to think I was like Charlie, but I don't think I was. My [mother] says that I was... she uses the term hellion. I wasn't obnoxious or precocious, but I was curious. A lot of practical jokes and stuff like that. I got on her nerves, basically. I pissed her off quite frequently."
Johnny Depp, IGN july 2005

On this film with Willy Wonka there wasn't specifically any one or two guys that were models, so to speak, for the character, but there were memories that I have of when I was a little kid of watching children's shows and children show hosts. And I distinctly remember, even at that age, their speech pattern and their kind of musical quality of the way they're speaking to the camera, to the children. I thought, even then, it was really strange. I thought it was super bizarre because it was all, "Hello, children. How are you??" You know, that kind of thing. Guys that I watched like Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers and Uncle Al became that main part of the ingredient. And game show hosts that I remember seeing and watching and thinking, "My God! They can't be like that at home. They can't actually be like that."
Johnny Depp, IGN july 2005

Steve Martin, Robin Williams, Christopher Walken, Nicolas Cage, Will Smith, Brad Pitt, Mike Myers, Ben Stiller, 'The Rock (I)', Bill Murray, Leslie Nielsen, Patrick Stewart, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Rowan Atkinson, Robert De Niro and Michael Keaton were all considered for the role of Willy Wonka. Marilyn Manson also badly wanted the part. Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler were early contenders for the role of Willy Wonka.

(About the alledged Michael Jackson-inspiration) "That never crossed my mind," he says. "I never thought about it once, honestly. But it's interesting, people's perceptions."
Johnny Depp, Newsweek, july 2005

(On cooperation with Tim Burton) "There is this kind of mutual understanding of things, and a mutual fascination with people, human beings, weirdness, character flaws, human tics and all of that stuff."
Johnny Depp, NC Times, july 2005

"Somebody sent me an article where Gene Wilder said, "Why would they remake Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?" We didn't remake "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," we remade (the book) "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."
Johnny Depp, NC Times, july 2005

"The first thing that struck me about Freddie when I met him on Finding Neverland were his eyes. Not just because they're these piercing, beautiful blue eyes. It was something in that there's a purity in Freddie that is astonishing. It's mesmerizing. He's incapable of lying or telling a lie. He's just so pure."
Johnny Depp, IGN july 2005

"It is a relatively new thing for me to have more than a few people go to see my films. But it is very exciting. That whole part of the process is so foreign to me that, literally, three weeks ago [in August] I called my agency and said, 'Is Charlie doing okay?', and my agent said, 'Yeah, it looks like it will cross the $200-million mark domestically.' I didn't know what that meant, so I said, 'Is that good?'
Johnny Depp, Straight.com, september 2005

QUOTES FROM OTHERS:

(About Willy Wonka) "He's not a father figure--he's a mess. There are lots of people who are geniuses in one area, but have complete deficiencies in other areas of their lives."
Tim Burton, Newsweek, july 2005

Deep Wonka's line, "Good morning, starshine, the earth says hello," is the first line of the song "Good Morning Starshine" from the musical "Hair".

"It's not like we're burning DVDs of the old movie. Anybody who loves it can watch it."
Tim Burton, Newsweek, july 2005

"It was the first time I didn't have to talk a studio into him,"Burton says. "It was like he'd landed on the planet for the first time! He's been doing f---ing great work for years, but... whatever. I guess it's all box office for them."
Tim Burton, Newsweek, july 2005

"Johnny's fantastic! He's a really special person and he treats everyone as an equal and I think that's a really good thing."
Freddie Highmore, IGN july 2005

"It was a very relaxed atmosphere on set with Tim and I'm really lucky to have been able to work with him. He has tons of energy and his imagination is amazing."
Freddie Highmore, IGN july 2005
