SYNOPSIS
Vianne Rocher and her young daughter are
drifters who are met with skepticism and resistance when they move
to a conservative town in rural France and open a chocolate shop
during Lent. As Vianne begins to work her magic and help those
around her, the townspeople are soon won-over by her exuberance
and her delicious chocolates - except for the mayor, who is
determined to shut her down. When a group of river drifters visit
the town, Vianne teaches the townspeople something about
acceptance, and finds love for herself along the
way.

QUOTES FROM JOHNNY DEPP
"I ate more chocolate than I wanted to. About
three seconds more in the take, and I probably would have been
spewing."
Johnny Depp, World Entertainment News Network,
December 2000
"Juliette’s amazing – beautiful and deep
and she makes you fall in love with her. I think as an actress
she’s deeply commited, intense and works very, very hard, while
constantly thinking. She’s capable of anything and never does the
same thing twice, so it’s always a bit of a surprise. I think
she’s very gifted and makes really good choices – if art is
possible in cinema then I think she’s doing her best to come as
close as she can."

"One of the
things appealed to me when I read the screenplay was, that
it's OK to break the sort of boundaries of what is normal -- or
what is considered normal. You've got to step outside of that and
break the routine and not be so afraid to try new
things."
Johnny Depp, CNN.com
"We close ourselves off and we live in these little worlds that
are comfortable and safe. It's routine and boring and filled with
fear and guilt and it's no good, you know? It's no good for
you."
Johnny Depp, CNN.com
"I think, more than anyone else in the film, that somehow it
occurred to me that I was the one who was going to be eating the
most chocolate. And I'm not a huge fan of chocolate, especially
really rich, deep, dark, bitter chocolate. I like the cheap stuff.
And I was eating chocolate take after take after
take."
Johnny Depp, CNN.com
"I wanted
to play a character who was a kind of outsider but very, very
comfortable outsider. Someone who's not a victim - doesn't
betray himself or feel like a victim. He's outside, because he
wants to be outside. I like being outside. I don't want to be
caught up in the who's-who stuff. ... I don't want to play the
game, you know. ... I just am not interested."
Johnny Depp,
CNN.com
"Well, the film ... has such a kind of magical quality, and it
doesn't particularly feel like an American film, you know, it just
doesn't feel like an American product. It has something very
European about it."
Johnny Depp, CNN.com

Although
a large portion of the film was shot in France,
Johnny Depp never actually filmed any of his part there (despite his
home being in
France).

"Johnny is
very easy to work with. I think this is one of the most pleasant
times I have had on a movie. It’s a chemistry. You never know why
it happens, but when it does, you have to say it and share it
because it’s not always the case. We have scenes were I think it’s
more about what’s not said than what’s said."
Juliette
Binoche
"Johnny Depp is my perfect chocolate - he's dark, sumptuous,
and tasty."
Juliette Binoche, februari 2001
