SYNOPSIS
Based on Alan Moore and Eddie
Campbell's graphic novel about Jack the Ripper, From Hell
stars
Johnny Depp as an opium-smoking and unaccountably psychic police
inspector whose clairvoyant visions aid him in his pursuit of the legendary
slasher in 1888 London.

QUOTES FROM
JOHNNY DEPP
"It's
similar territory (to "Sleepy Hollow") in a way, but from my point
of view, the characters are so different that I think Abberline
would have despised Ichabod Crane." Johnny Depp, Take 5,
2003
"I've
read most of the Jack the Ripper stories, but "From Hell" is a
strong one. You read a lot of things that don't surprise you,
because it's just straightforward stuff. The vision of the Hughes
Brothers combined with the vision of Alan Moore though ... it's
one of the theories on the Ripper case that was pretty shocking
and pretty important." Johnny Depp, Take 5,
2003
"Allen
gave me one of the most beautiful pieces of direction very subtly
during a fairly large and tense scene. As an actor, each take you
want to try something new to shake things up, so I was trying
stuff... Allen came over after the take, leaned down and said into
my ear, 'No sunshine.' “ Johnny Depp, Take 5, 2003

The Hughes Brothers originally wanted
Daniel Day-Lewis to play the lead role. When that fell
through, they interviewed Sean Connery, Jude Law, and Brad
Pitt before settling on Johnny Depp.

| "When
I was thinking about how to build up the character, my first
instinct was that he should be balding, but those ideas were shut
down as the words were coming out of my
mouth." Johnny
Depp,
Take 5, 2003
"I
love playing real life characters. If you play a real person
though, there's much more responsibility attached to the
role.”

Great care was taken to accurately
reproduce the actual sites of the "ripper" murders.
Illustrations and actual photographs from 1888 were used.
Similar care was used to reproduce the wounds inflicted upon
the ripper's
victims.

| o | o | | "On this one
we got lucky," said Albert. "We haven't had the experience of
temper tantrums and people running into their trailers." "We
talked about casting one of those guys just so we could get past
it," said Allen. "We screwed up with Johnny Depp, who is the
sweetest person on the planet and does none of that... He's coming
tomorrow to Prague. I want to tongue-kiss Johnny
Depp!" Albert and Allen Hughes, Peary Film reviews,
july 2003
"Only at the meeting we had before he
came aboard to do the movie. He brought up this stack of books and
they were old and yellow, so you could tell he had them for years,
and he definitely had read at least 70 per cent of the stuff that
was out there." Albert Hughes, BBC,
2003
