SYNOPSIS

Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) is a young, naive American who gives up college and volunteers for combat in
Vietnam. Upon arrival, he quickly discovers that his presence is quite nonessential, and is considered insignificant to the other soldiers, as he has not fought for as long as the rest of them and felt the effects of combat.

Chris has two commanding officers, the ill-tempered and indestructible Staff Sergeant Robert Barnes (Tom Berenger) and the more pleasant and cooperative Sergeant Elias Grodin (Willem Dafoe). A line is drawn between the two officers and a number of men in the platoon when an illegal killing occurs during a village raid.

As
the war continues, Chris himself draws towards psychological meltdown. And as he struggles for survival, he soon realizes he is fighting two battles, the conflict with the enemy and the conflict between the men within his platoon.

QUOTES FROM JOHNNY DEPP

"Oliver Stone said to me: I'm gonna need you for about thirteen weeks, we are going to be in the jungle, it's going to be awful conditions, are you ready to do that?". And I said, Oh yeah, absolutely!
To the Phillipines ... I had never been outside the country before...."

Oliver Stone considered casting Johnny Depp for the lead role of Pvt. Chris Taylor but Depp was too young for the part and unknown at the time. Stone said that Depp would someday become a huge star and is thus one of the first filmmakers who introduced Johnny Depp to Hollywood.

"Everybody said: don't go to the Phillipines, it's too dangerous. The EDSA, the People's Army was there... Just chaos, riots and murders and bombs and shit everywhere ...we went there just two days after Marcos had split ..."
Johnny Depp, interview premiere Platoon, 1986

"The rations we were given to eat [for the film] were the most shocking thing you'd ever seen... There was something called "bean component", and "turkey loaf". I'd rather eaten my socks at that moment".
Johnny Depp, interview premiere Platoon, 1986

QUOTE OLIVER STONE

"Johnny? I could tell a mile away: you are going to be a star, there's absolutely no question about it".

All of the actors had to endure a harsh 14-day boot camp in the  Philippines before the shooting of the film commenced. The actors were given military haircuts, were required to stay in character throughout the camp, ate only military rations, were not allowed to shower, slept in the jungle, and even had rotations for night watch
